Alive and Kicking Ghana (A&K) has launched the 2015 edition of its sports related health outreach programme with the event set to come of next month.HIV
This African charity organization will hold this event in partnership with ICAP, UK ?PLC as they seek to impact positive healthy living in the Ghanaian child.
The health outreach programme will be on HIV/AIDS and malaria, and would be held in three districts in the Greater Accra region namely; Korley Klottey, La Dade Kotopon and Ledzokuku-Krowor.
This specially designed football tournament will use the concept of Sports for Development, combining football drills with health education on HIV/AIDS and malaria.
At the launch in Accra on Wednesday, Sam Bonsu, General Manager of A&K said, his outfit will train 48 sports /physical education teachers on how to use football drills to convey information and advice about HIV/AIDS and malaria to the children ahead of the tournament.
These trained instructors he added, will work with the children over a period of time, preparing them for the football tournament and practicing the health education drills.
Two trainers from the Arsenal FC, UK Gapers?? programme will join the teachers to work with the children in the schools ahead of the event.
The tournament will be held in the three Greater Accra districts between June 23-26 with the 48 schools expected to participate, receiving footballs with HIV/AIDS and malaria messages inscribed on them.
At the end of the event, awards would be handed out to winners with all 48 sports/physical education teachers and 15 children from each of the participating schools completing a questionnaire before and after the programme to determine its impact.
Alive and Kicking is an African social enterprise charity that manufactures sports ball (football, netball, volleyball and rugby balls) in Kenya, Zambia and Ghana employing 140 staff and producing 70,000 balls a year for sale on the local and international market.
Profits generated is reinvested back into the business to achieve three social objectives namely; improving livelihood of employees, improving sporting access in poor communities and using sport to raise awareness about health issues.
The Ghana outlet was established in August 2012 and started production in December of that same year producing hand stitched leather balls made from local raw materials and specially designed for African conditions.
