Afrobarometer has trained African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) researchers in data interpretation techniques to strengthen evidence-based governance reforms.

The two-day workshop (24–25 July) provided hands-on sessions using Afrobarometer’s public attitude datasets covering 43 African nations.

The training, part of a renewed institutional partnership, focused on aligning Afrobarometer’s citizen perception surveys with APRM’s Africa Governance Index and National Programmes of Action. Participants learned to access and interpret data through interactive exercises exploring real-world policy applications.

Afrobarometer capacity building manager Dominique Dryding noted the initiative promotes “stronger, more accountable institutions” by integrating citizen perspectives. APRM Chief of Staff Damien Thesee emphasized alignment with the body’s 2025–2028 strategic goals of “professionalism, performance, and probity.”

Monitoring officer Peter Katwesige highlighted the value of “current citizen perceptions” for governance reviews. Afrobarometer’s open-source data – drawn from 430,000+ interviews – informs global indices like the Ibrahim Index of African Governance and World Bank indicators.
