AFRICAN UNION ORGANISES CEREMONY TO PAY TRIBUTE TO LATE PRIME MINISTER MELES ZENAWI OF ETHIOPIA

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, August 29, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ ? The flag of the African Union is flying at half mast at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, following the death last week of the Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia Mr. Meles Zenawi .

On this sad occasion, the African Union is organizing on Friday 31st August 2012 at its Headquarters, a ceremony to pay tribute to the latePrime Minister Meles Zenawi.

The ceremony will bring together high officials and staff of the African Union Commission, Members of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), representatives of the diplomatic corps, the United Nations agencies, and international communities based in Addis Ababa, as well as the Ethiopian Government.

The program of the ceremony will feature among others: the observation of a minute of silence; statement by the Chairperson of the AUC; tribute by the Chairperson of the PRC; tribute by the president of the AU Staff Association; sermon by a church minister and a video clip on the late Prime Minister focusing on his activities as an active player and spokesperson of the African Union in presenting the African common position in various world issues.

There will be a word of thanks by a representative of the Ethiopian Government to crown the occasion.

Worth recalling that in his message of condolence addressed to the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, on 21 August 2012, the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, underlined the important role played by the late Prime Minister in the advancement of the objectives of the AU and the promotion of Africa?s interests in global fora.

?The death of Prime Minister Meles has robbed Africa of one of its greatest sons,? he underscored.
