African Union Commission?s Chairperson Meets With UN Secretary-General in New York

NEW YORK, October 1, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ ? The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, met with the United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Ban-Ki-moon, at the UN Headquarters in New York, on 29 September 2012, on the margins of the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting offered Dr. Ping an opportunity to bid farewell to the Secretary-General before he officially hands over the leadership of the AU Commission to the incoming Chairperson, Dr. Dlamini-Zuma, on 15 October 2012.

The Secretary-General commended Dr. Ping for his stewardship of the Commission over the last four and a half years and thanked the Chairperson for his support to the work of the UN.

The Secretary-General wished the Outgoing Chairperson success in his future endeavors.

Chairperson Ping expressed his appreciation for the excellent cooperation extended by the Secretary-General to the African Union and emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership between the AU and UN in addressing Africa?s peace and security challenges.

Both Leaders also discussed the positive developments in Somalia, as well as the negotiations between Sudan and South Sudan, and jointly underscored the need for a broad approach to the complex crises in Mali and the Sahel.
