The Zambian government on Wednesday called on African countries and development partners to increase their support to national development banks to enable the banks to effectively contribute to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Minister of National Development Planning Alexander Chiteme said development banks should receive attention because of role they played in national developments.

National development banks are hugely important to sustainable development in Africa. They must now receive the attention they deserve from all stakeholders including regulators and larger multilateral development finance institutions, he said when he addressed a conference organized by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Center for Africa in Kigali, Rwanda, according to a release.

He expressed Zambia’s support to the SDG Center for Africa’s continent-wide program to support the reform of national development banks for the achievement of the SDGs.

While acknowledging that development banks play a key role in national development, the Zambian minister said there were still areas where improvements were needed to be made to effectively contribute to sustainable development.

The conference will serve as a prelude to the 7th Board Meeting of SDGs Center for Africa when Heads of State and Government are expected to deliberate on the SDGs implementation on Friday, June 14. Enditem
