The New African Charter International (NACI) has issued an urgent appeal for peaceful resolution to escalating political tensions in Togo.

Nationwide protests erupted on June 26, 2025, demanding President Faure Gnassingbé’s resignation amid accusations of failed leadership. NACI links the unrest to recent constitutional changes, warning that instability risks devolving into violence.

In a July 5 statement, the Accra-based organization urged immediate United Nations intervention. It cautioned against retaliatory actions, emphasizing that “an eye for an eye” would only deepen human rights violations and infrastructure damage. NACI implored protesters to pursue nonviolent solutions while calling on Togo’s government to address grievances transparently.

The group stressed that prolonged conflict would disproportionately harm civilians, advocating instead for a “clear roadmap” toward political settlement. It challenged the international community to act decisively, stating: “The United Nations must wake from slumber.”

NACI identifies as a pan-African movement promoting sovereignty, development, and unity. Its declaration framed the crisis as a test for continental leadership, condemning oppression while endorsing governance that harnesses resources “for the upliftment of Africans.”
