There is need to accelerate development process in African so as to accord people on the continent a dignified existence, experts said on Monday.

The experts have also called on governments to invest in the implementation of diversification programs along with other measures that can bring about rapid economic growth on the continent.

“It is time for the continent to begin to seriously look at accelerating its development process so that its people can begin to lead dignified lives,” Lawrence Banda, a peace and development specialist, said in an interview with Xinhua.

According to him, numbers of economic migrants from Africa to Europe can reduce significantly if the continent starts registering economic gains as a result of implementing the great economic plans that most African governments have designed such as economic diversification.

Banda, who is Universal Peace Federation-Zambia Chapter Vice General secretary, also pointed out that sustainable peace endeavors have a better chance of being successful in thriving economies, hence the need to promote rapid economic growth.

“It is therefore prudent we make good use of investment opportunities that seek to uplift our people from the doldrums of poverty. We have the abundant natural resources, so let us form partnerships and allow both local and foreign investment particularly in the agriculture sector which has a lot of potential and opportunities,” Banda said.

And Rose Fumpa Makano, a development specialist and researcher, said the greatest and most urgent need of most African countries is increasing employment opportunities.

Makono, a lecturer at the Dag Hammarskjold Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies at Zambia’s Copperbelt University, said economic diversification provides many opportunities through value addition.

“The value addition chain processes involve a number of economic activities that require the participation of people across sectors, as well as direct and indirect employment opportunities and sustainable livelihoods,” Makano explained. Enditem
