It draws its membership from the education ministry, social welfare and community developments, national disaster management organization, food and agriculture ministry, national health insurance authority and the statistical service.

The committee is expected to establish a solid and efficient social protection system to deal with fundamental issues affecting the under-privileged.

It would be visiting the communities to monitor the conditions of such people and identify what support could be given to them.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. John Alexander Ackon, who was on hand to perform the inauguration in Kodie, asked the members to be open-minded and refuse to allow partisan political to undermine their work.

They should accept to pull together to create equal opportunities for the poor, the needy and the disadvantaged across the various communities.

He indicated that social protection, globally, had become a major tool for addressing poverty, vulnerability and social exclusion.

Mr. Ackon said if social protection interventions were properly designed and implemented these should contribute to socio-economic development and substantially help to narrow the inequality gap.

He underlined the government’s resolve to work hard to transform the living conditions of the vulnerable, the poor and the marginalized.

Madam Della Sowah, Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, urged the committee to work closely with the assembly and the unit committees.

She said the project which was being pushed by her ministry was meant to make things better for everybody.

Nana Boakye Yam, the chief of Nkwantakese, called for strong support for orphaned and needy children to assist them to live their dreams.
