Thousands of fish have died in northwestern Zambia’s Solwezi district when a truck carrying sulphuric acid overturned and spilled it in a river, police said on Sunday.

Northwestern Province Police Commissioner Aixencio Daka said the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday when the driver of the truck lost control due to speeding.

“The spilled acid has killed thousands of fish in the river and unfortunately people are picking the fish for consumption or sale,”he said in a statement.

Authorities have since put lime around the accident scene and in the water to try to neutralize the acid, Daka added. Enditem
