Airtel Ghana has announced its sponsorship to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) towards the forthcoming Millennium Marathon event, scheduled for September 6, 2015 making it the Title Sponsor of the race.

The company?s decision to sponsor and be part of the event was pushed by a request made by the organizing committee of the marathon, Millennium Marathon Sports Limited (MMSL), and the AMA on corporate organizations to lend support towards this laudable initiative.
The Managing Director (MD) of Airtel Ghana, Lucy Quist, who paid a courtesy call on the Mayor of Accra, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije to announced the company?s sponsorship package for the Millennium Marathon event noted that her company feels honoured to be part of the event since it is a very big undertaken for any city in the world to host such a marathon.
She said, the organization of the Marathon in itself gives a big sense of pride for Accra and Ghana, as it also offers opportunity to show-off the country and the City to the world.
?I believe that is a very laudable initiative since it also encourages people to be fit, and I hope through this we will be setting a example for the entire continent,? she said.
In an interview with Lucy Quist, she mentioned that the event is in line with Airtel?s strong belief in unleashing the power of potential of the African and for that matter the company supports initiatives that build the human capacity. ??. And that is what the Marathon is all about. We are proud to be associated with the event and hope it will be a great event,? she added.
As part of Airtel?s sponsorship package for the event, Lucy Quist noted, the company will be visible in all event locations to offer freebies to people participating as well as spectators so as to draw greater participation from every community within the Marathon catchment areas.
Lucy Quist also enumerated that the company is prepared and ever ready to support, as it continues to do, the future of sports in Ghana.
She added that ?the Airtel rising Star initiative is an example since stars we churned out are now playing for national teams.
She said Marathon in Ghana would also go a long way to boost the confidence of the youth to take sports seriously and become sports icons for the country.
Receiving the Airtel MD and her entourage, the Mayor of Accra Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije expressed appreciation to Airtel Ghana for supporting the event and expressed the hope that the two institutions, AMA and Airtel Ghana, would continue to protect the already existing good relationship between them.
He indicated that the step taken by Airtel Ghana will go a long way to make the forth coming marathon a success and called on other corporate organizations to join Airtel?s footsteps in this regard.
?I want to assure you that the AMA has faith in businesses and organizations and hence we are looking forward to see all major businesses come on board and emulate Airtel in sponsoring this event,? he said.
??. Everybody should come behind the AMA in this, since there are diverse business opportunities for every single individual, organization, business to harness in the course of the race.?
The Mayor further reiterated his and the AMA?s readiness to work with Airtel to achieve excellence in whatever they do.
According to the organizers of the Marathon, the event would be made an annual event, and would cover a distance of 21km. It is expected to attract thousands of runners both locally and internationally.
It could be recalled that Mr Haile Gebrselassie, World Marathon Champion, came to Accra with a delegation from Ethiopia to launch and promote the event.
During his visit to the Vice President of Ghana, Mr Gebrselassie said the Accra Marathon was not going to be just a one-off event but would become a permanent feature on the Ghanaian calendar.
However, the Millennium Marathon Sports Company, organizers of the event, said they are working alongside major stakeholders in the country including the Government of Ghana, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Tourism Ministry, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, and Ghana Police Service among others to ensure smooth running of the event.
