Political scientist Dr. Joshua Zaato has proposed state security verification of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s medical treatment in the United States, as the accountability dispute with Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) intensifies.
The suggestion comes amid conflicting positions – while OSP head Kissi Agyebeng insists illness shouldn’t prevent accountability, Ofori-Atta’s wife maintains his cancer treatment takes precedence over in-person questioning.
The former minister faces five major investigations including the controversial National Cathedral expenditures and ambulance procurement contracts. While Mrs. Ofori-Atta cites her husband’s willingness to cooperate remotely through video conferencing or legal representatives, the OSP maintains its demand for physical presence.
This standoff highlights the tension between enforcing public accountability and respecting health considerations, with potential implications for Ghana’s anti-corruption framework and treatment of former officials under investigation.
