Yesterday, the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel, disclosed that a total of $700 million stolen by the late former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, and deposited in Swiss banks has been returned to Nigeria.

The envoy revealed in Abuja, yesterday while briefing newsmen about an upcoming seminar by the Switzerland embassy and the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA) on Anti – Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism.

Dr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel comments were in sharp contradiction to the comments of Buhari who claimed that Abacha never stole.

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, who ruled Nigeria between 1983 and 1985, and his successor, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, gave Abacha the clean bill in Kano last year after the remembrance prayers marking 10 years of the death of Abacha, who ruled between 1993 and 1998.

Buhari, in his own comments yesterday, described the allegations of looting against Abacha as ?baseless?, because according to him, ?ten years after Abacha, those allegations remain unproven because of lack of facts?.

But with the Swiss Ambassador’s revelations, the question being asked is who is right between the Ambassador and Buhari.
