An upper Area Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a trader, Moses Udi, 37, to six years imprisonment for defiling a minor. The judge,Mustapha Hassan, passed the sentence after Udi pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of defiling a 12-year-old girl.
Hassan, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine.

The judge said that the prosecution had convinced the court beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offence. He said that beyond reasonable doubt was the standard of evidence required to validate a criminal conviction.

After the sentence, Hassan warned Udi to desist from defiling minors.
He warned that the court would not be lenient in future if he appeared before it for a similar offence.
Udi had pleaded for leniency and promised that he would not do it again.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ado Ali, had told the court that Udi committed the offence on January 1 at about 7p.m. Ali said that on the day of the incident, the mother of the girl reported the matter at “A“ Division Police Station.

He said that the complainant told the police that Udi lured her 12-year-old daughter to Yellow Rose Hotel in Kabong area of Jos, where he had sex with her. According to the prosecutor, the accused was arrested on the day with the minor in the hotel.

Ali tendered a medical report as exhibit that indicated that the accused actually had sex with the minor.
