Sir John Major

A town in Spain is reportedly planning to name a street after Sir John Major .

The road in Candeleda will be known as Avenida de John Major or Avenida John Major ? which translates to John Major Avenue ? in honour of the former British Prime Minister.

Local politicians backed the tribute as a way of promoting the holiday destination, which Major and his wife Norma have regularly visited for the last 25 years, reports The Daily Telegraph.

Councillor Rodrigo Munoz, who proposed the idea, said: ?We obviously want to promote Candeleda and see this as an excellent way of achieving this objective.

?But it?s also our way of saying thank you to Mr Major for choosing to holiday in our town when he was Prime Minister and repeating year after year.

?He obviously likes it here and we?re delighted to receive him.

?I?ve enjoyed a beer with him in the town hall square the last couple of times he?s been and he seems a very nice down-to-earth man who, although he doesn?t speak Spanish, can say the odd word.?

An unveiling ceremony will be held at the end of the month, to which Major will be invited.

A spokesman for the former Conservative leader said: ?Sir John is currently away on holiday with his family, but I?m sure he?d be hugely touched and honoured by it.?
