Nine people were killed in a road accident on Tuesday night in the central Ugandan district of Buikwe, a police spokesman has said.
Lamek Kigozi, Ssezibwa regional police spokesperson, told Xinhua that nine people died on the spot and 13 others injured following an accident involving a truck and two commuter taxis at Kitogoma along the Kampala-Jinja highway.
He said the accident occurred after the truck lost control, swapped and veered off the road, ramping into two commuter taxis traveling from the opposite direction.
Police attributed the accident to reckless driving and over speeding.
The injured have been sent to hospitals for medical treatment, Kigozi said.
Uganda registers at least 20,000 accidents with over 2,000 deaths each year, making it one of the countries with the highest road accident fatality rates in the world, according to police figures. Enditem
