Sixty women residing in Zongo communities in the Tema Metropolis are undergoing a nine-day capacity building workshop under the zongo cuisines promotion programme.

The workshop being held at the Assembly hall of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) was organized by the Ministry of Inner-Cities and Zongo Development (MICZD) in collaboration with the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI).

Madam Habiba Sumani, Director, Women Entrepreneurship Development, NBSSI, speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the workshop said, the programme was an economic empowerment project for women in the Zongo communities who served varieties of traditional Zongo foods to the public.

Madam Sumani added that it was aimed at training the women on how to manage, expand and promote their food businesses.

The training, she noted, covered building their business management skills especially how to manage their capitals and profits, business branding towards meeting international markets requirements and food handling.

“Our team of resource personnel have started training the women on hygiene and food safety management especially on environmental cleanliness. They are also being trained on occupational health and good safety to prevent occupational hazards,” she added.

According to her, they would also benefit from training on proper packaging to equip them on the process and duration of packaged food to avoid contamination and subsequent food poisoning.

She indicated that the resource persons were also training beneficiaries on how to create an enabling environment for good customer relationship aimed at properly positioning them to attract orders from top companies.

Madam Sumani said the programme was on pilot basis for Zongo communities within the Greater Accra Region adding that eight training centres had been set up in Tema, Ashaiman, Nima, Maamobi, and Sukura among others.

She expressed joy at the massive turnout at the various centres and encouraged the women to take the training serious, implement the skills to improve their work.

Participants would be awarded certificates after the successful completion of the training.
