At least 49 people died while 79 were seriously injured during various road traffic accidents recorded during the Easter holiday in Zambia, the police said on Wednesday.

Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Charity Chanda-Munganga said 291 road traffic accidents were recorded during the long Easter holiday compared to 184 accidents recorded during the same period last year.
“Out of the 291 accidents reported this year, 21 were fatal, 35 serious while 66 were slight injury accidents. These accidents left 49 people dead, 79 seriously injured and 93 slightly injured, ” she said in a statement.
“Most of the causes of the accidents that happened during this period are due to human error. We would like to advise motorists to adhere to road traffic rules and regulations,” she added.
The biggest accident occurred in southern Zambia’s Mazabuka district when a truck rammed into a building, killing 17 people on the spot while the other one involved another truck which was hit by a train in Kafue district, south of Lusaka, the country’s capital in which five people died while 16 were injured.
