At least 40 cases of sexual violence have been reported since February in eastern Ituri district of the Democratic Republic of Congo, a local NGO says.

Noella Alifwa, the coordinator for the NGO said the perpetrators were militias of the Ituri Patriotic Resistance Front led by Cobra Matata.
“Between 25 to 42 cases were committed in Bunia town, the headquarters of Ituri district, during armed robberies,” she said.
“We have received 42 cases out of which 25 were female victims attacked in Bunia town and 17 others were from villages some distance from Bunia,” she said.
Alifwa urged the central and provincial governments to make more efforts in restoring lasting peace in the district. Enditem
