A heavy downpour which lasted for about five hours on Friday hit Obosi town in Nigeria’s southeastern Anambra state, leaving at least four people dead and destroying property worth millions of naira.

rain waterThe early hour rain led to the collapse of a four-storey uncompleted building in the Owelle Aja area of the town, and flooded many compounds, making their occupants trapped.

A family of four was drowned during the downpour, local residents say.

Some affected residents were removing their personal belongings in the late afternoon when the flood abated, while others were busy laying sandbags and constructing drainage channels.

Local resident, Achebe Ifemaje, said the government must move fast to re-plan the community and stop land speculators from selling every available space without minding the water channels.

Another resident, Micheal Chukwurah, urged the government to stop land speculators from indiscriminate sale of land and restore the masterplan of the community by removing structures that blocked water passages. Enditem
