Half-Assini District Police in the Western Region have arrested four fishermen from Axim in the Nzema East Municipality in connection with a dead body which was recently washed ashore at Bonyere near Half-Assini.
They are Kobinah Seiku, 48, Emmanuel Aidoo aka Kofi Edu, 37, Paul Eshun aka Nana Yaw, 29 and Francis Binney aka Kweku Mensah, 48, all crew members of “God Is King” fishing Company, Axim.
The District Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Charles Mensah, who disclosed this to the GNA in an interview at Half-Assini said one other “Osaam” was at large.
He said the suspects allegedly set off at Axim around 1030 hours on Thursday February 2, 2017 with the deceased for a fishing expedition in nearby Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, only to find his body at Bonyere Sea Shore the next day.
ASP Mensah indicated that the body has been identified as that of Robert Quansah Nyame and has been buried after a postmortem examination at Half-Assini Government Hospital, which indicated “Assault & Asphyxia Secondary to Drowning “as cause of death.
He said the crew was spotted in Axim at 2345 hours on Tuesday Feb 7 2017 and were arrested by the Axim Police and handed over to the Half-Assini police for investigations.
The Crime Officer said the suspects claimed that on their way, the deceased declared his intention on the Bonyere waters not to go to Cote d’Ivoire to avoid arrest over there and therefore picked a piece of board in the Canoe and swum back.
According to him, the fishermen said, they waited on the waters till their colleague landed safely before they continued their voyage to Cote D’ivoire.
ASP Mensah said they would soon be arraigned before Court.
At about 1815 hours on Friday February 3 2017 the People of Bonyere found the body of a male on the shore, which later turned out to be that of the deceased.
