Timber Industry Collapse,30,000 Jobs Lost

According to the Chief Executive of the Ghana Timber Millers Organisation (GTMO), Dr Kwame Asamoah Adam, 30,000 jobs have been lost in the collapse of close to 60 local timber companies in the last decade.

He said this in Kumasi after the opening of the annual general meeting of the Forestry Senior Staff Association (FOSSA) themed: ?Enhancing the contribution of senior staff towards an effective Forestry Commission,? at Akyawkrom near Ejisu in the Ashanti Region on Friday. He believes the timber industry is gradually dieing out since the remaining ones are producing half of their capacity.

Even with the decline in the industry?s activities,he was sure the Forestry Commission?s (FC) private sector plantation development with help awaken the industry. As such, people must calm down for the the whole initiative to mature since it takes time.

The Executive Director of the Forestry Commission (FC), Mr Raphael Yeboah, was present to assure the FOSSA members that it will do everything possible to keep the timber industry alive. He assured that the FC has all it takes to awaken the industry, all it needs is time.
