wpid-5-4Chessboardandpieceskasparovvsdeepblue1996lg.jpgBenjamin Othner, won gold medal in the senior category of the Mentors Chess Academy Junior Open Chess tournament held at the Merton International School, Accra on Saturday.

The five-round Swiss tournament attracted students from the Ghana International School, Al-rayan International School, Queens International School, Germans-Swiss International School, and Soul clinic International school.
Students were paired in age categories- Under 18, Under 14 and Under 12 fir the day-long activity.
Othner, from Ghana International school finished with an impressive five wins to take home the gold medal, Atal Tripathi from (GIS) finished second while both Keziah George from the University of Ghana and Sackey Tetteh, from GIS, took bronze.
In the intermediate section, Hassan Bangoura, from Queens International school, came first with five wins out of five whereas Emmanuel Bedrah, from Queens International School, Kojo Asafo-Adjei, from Merton International school and Raymond Batsa from the Police Depot School, earned a silver medal each.
Mc-Anthony Zukowski from Queens International school, won the gold medal in the junior category. Krishang Agarwal of Soul Clinic International school, finished in second place and took a silver medal while Shivbrar Jyot, from Al-Rayan International School won bronze.
The Cordinator of the Academy, David Boamah Acheampong, was happy with the level of concentration and sportsmanship displayed by the young players.
He urged schools to make chess part of their curriculum, insisting it also improves critical thinking and problem solving skills of students.
