The Rwandan police on Monday announced it has arrested 28 people for operating bars in their homes in contravention of the country’s COVID-19 lockdown measures.

“The police on Sunday night arrested 10 women and 18 men who had turned their homes into bars in different parts of Kigali, which is against COVID-19 lockdown measures,” police spokesperson John Bosco Kabera told Rwanda Television in a news program.

The arrestees included those that were selling alcohol from their homes, or going there to buy and others that invited their friends to share in their homes, which is flouting guidelines on social distancing required by lockdown measures that ordered all bars to close.

The lockdown that has been extended until April 30 doesn’t stop people from taking alcohol from their homes but it stops them from inviting neighbours and friends for a drink.

The police on Saturday warned of consequences for those who attempt to leave their homes, unless for essential purposes or providing essential services.

Anyone who contravenes the lockdown regulations will be found guilty of a criminal offence and be punished by relevant laws, the police said.

The Rwandan health ministry on Monday evening said the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the central African country remained at 147, while the number of recoveries rose to 80.
