Supposed good Samaritans managed to steal about 250 live chickens, guinea fowls and turkeys as they pretended to save the livestock when a section of the Achimota Market was gutted by fire.wpid-Fire-burnssssss-480x243.jpg

Items such as refrigerators, chicken dressing machines, cooking utensils and other personal belongings worth about Ghc 10,000.00 were destroyed.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Baba Moro Alhassan, Chairman of the Achimota Butchers Association, said the fire started around 2300hrs on Monday when an electric pole close to the butchers? section caught fire.

?The fire destroyed the whole of the livestock area without being able to salvage anything whilst the ?good Samiratans? also had a field?s day,? he said.
He said it took the Ghana National Fire Services some hours to put the raging fire under control.
It nearly spread to the Ghana Post building had it not been for the swiftness of the Fire Service personnel and some eyewitnesses, he said.
Mr Alhassan said: ?We are really in big trouble if we don?t get help from the Government and other philanthropists because majority of the victims had borrowed from the banks to trade?.
Mr Thomas Abare who trades in chicken, guinea fowl and turkey, said he could only salvage half of his 500 birds with some stolen and others burnt.

He also lost his chicken dressing machine worth GHc 4500.00 and appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation, individuals and corporate bodies to come to their aid.
