A middle-aged man was shot dead by the assailants

Two commissioners and an adviser to the Ebonyi State governor, Martin Elechi, on Monday, escaped assassination attempt as gunmen stormed the service station they queue to buy fuel.

The incident occurred when the government officials were on their way to Ishiagu, in Ivo Local Government Area of the state for elections into the executive positions of the community.

A middle-aged man was shot dead by the assailants, who allegedly unleashed anger on motorists who were at the service station at the time of the attack.

An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the gunmen stormed the petrol station with two motorcycles and shot sporadically at a Toyota Hilux van, with registration number BDG 899 AG.

The State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Sylvester Igbo confirmed the incident.

He said one of the gunmen was killed by a combined team of military and police personnel while others escaped, adding that the police gave them a hot chase to a village around the state capital.

Fidelis Mbam, Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government however, assured staff that government would unravel the remote and immediate cause of the incident, saying the situation was under control.
