The recent clashes between Mali’s armed forces and the fighters of the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), a rebel group, in the Northern region of Lere left 19 people dead, among them nine soldiers and ten rebels, a source from Mali’s defense ministry said Thursday.

The source said six soldiers were injured and six others were taken hostage, while on the rebel side, 16 were injured.
The statement reiterated that “this was a provisional figure as a result of Wednesday’s attack against the army in Lere by the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad and its allies.”
“The situation in Lere is under control and the defense ministry wishes to encourage the Malian armed forces to accomplish their assignment with determination for the good of our Motherland, ” the statement concluded. Enditem
