A total of 105 individuals have been named as China’s “Good Samaritans” for January, after online recommendation and evaluation by Internet users nationwide.

They include cobbler Meng Guangbin, a resident of northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, who has been mending shoes for others free of charge for about twenty years, and Xu Jiren, a resident of east China’s Zhejiang Province, who donated 2.65 million yuan (about 385,000 U.S. dollars) to people in need at a party celebrating his 80th birthday.

According to wenming.cn, the official website for the selection, the event in January attracted about 30 million Internet users and authorities received 1.41 million recommendations.

Since January 2008, the website has released a list of “Good Samaritans” on a monthly basis and more than 10,000 individuals have been awarded the title. Enditem
