Mohamed Mohamud Saney, Commissioner of Mahas District where the village is located, confirmed the conflict.

Saney said Al-Shabaab militants ordered the herdsmen to pay what they called levies for their animals by force, but were refused.

He said eight Al-Shabaab fighters and two herdsmen were killed in the clash, adding one vehicle was burnt down.

The Al-Qaida-linked group Al-Shabaab, fighting against the Somali government, has not said it is responsible, but it has previously clashed with herdsmen when collecting “levies” in areas under their control. Enditem
