Lagos Building Collapse Kills 30 People

The death toll from a five-storey building which collapsed in Nigeria's coastal city of Lagos on Tuesday has risen to 30, according to local authorities.

General manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Michael Akindele told Xinhua on Wednesday that seven more bodies were recovered from the rubble during rescue operation.

The building which was under construction in Lekki-Phase 1 area of the state, collapsed during a heavy rainfall, according to Ibrahim Farinloye, spokesman of the National Emergency Management Agency in Nigeria’s southwest region.

Meanwhile, the police in Lagos have arrested the contractor handling the construction project, said spokeswoman of the state police command, Dolapo Badmus.

She said the contractor, identified as Taiwo Odofin, was currently under investigation.
Building collapses are not rare in Nigeria, often because of poor construction practices. More than 100 people were killed in building collapses across Nigeria last year, according to official data. Enditem
