Djibouti says talks with Eritrea to depend on release of prisoners

Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh said on Tuesday that the release of Djiboutians held in Eritrea remain the first precondition for the restart of talks to resolve a territorial dispute between his country and Eritrea, an official source said.

“The resolution of the dispute between Eritrea and my country will depend on the release of Djiboutian
soldiers,” Guelleh said on Monday in Doha during his three-day visit to Qatar, the mediator in the dispute between Eritrea and Djibouti.

The president made the remarks during his meeting with Qatar Emir Tamin Bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha.

He reminded the Emir that the refusal by Eritrea to give information on the state of the imprisoned Djiboutian soldiers was a source of “unbearable pain for their families.”

The two men agreed on the “need to end the prevailing situation of no war and no peace between Djibouti and Eritrea.”

Guelleh used the opportunity to thank the Emir of Qatar for his tireless efforts in the mediation of the dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea.

  1. Eritrean regime is rude to peace.however peaceful cooperation relations is the future. It is to much for eritrean s to leave in a spirit of conflict as if they are condemned or cursed by heavenly powers.but not .it is medival oreinatal dictatorship which might naturally or unnaturally disappeared. But the scenario of gadafi is not excluded any time.

    • You don’t know what you tolkning about. I don’t think that you know any thing about Eritrea. Eritrea is the most peacefull country in African.
Don’t buy western propaganda , try to know about Eritrea by your self .

  2. I think you don’t have any idea about the politics of the region .you better go back and refer to what has been exposed by wiki leaks cables .i believe that Eritrea is innocent it is the neighboring puppet countries creating trouble.

  3. Djibouti has handed over more than 200 Eritrean prisoners to the UN while Eritrea has yet to release about 9 Djiboutian soldiers it still keeps captive. Djibouti’s numerous attempts to resolve the broder dispute diplomatically were turned down by Asmara.

While Djibouti is massively investing in it’s infrastructure and economy, promoting regional integration for a more prosperous Africa, the Eritrean regime is busy terrorizing it’s people and waging wars against its neighbors. If only the mad man ruling over Eritrea wasn’t there, things could have been better for Eritrea and the region.

As a Djiboutian, I don’t see the brotherly Eritrean people as an enemy and believe we should pull our resources together to fight poverty, our real common enemy.
