The campaign for the June 28 communal, municipal and local elections across Benin on Wednesday kicked off and will close on Friday, Benin’s National Electoral Autonomous Commission (CENA) said.
Thirty-four parties and alliances participate in these elections which will provide 1,199 communal and municipal councilors expected to elect 77 mayors, 176 deputy-mayors and 546 district heads, according to CENA.
As part of these elections, the High Authority of Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC), Benin media regulation authority, on Monday established a calendar of fair access to national radio and television for all contestants.
“To expose their social program, contestants or lists of contestants have free and fair access to public and private means of information and communication in accordance with procedures and conditions determined by the HAAC,” it said.
The HAAC advised that, during the campaign period, media should abstain from broadcasting songs, games, advertisements, releases, proverbs, satirical narratives and cartoons likely to incite hatred or to jeopardize national cohesion.
It does not permit the broadcasting of opinion polls related to local elections and the rebroadcasting of news based on no attested inferences. Enditem
